Discover Munich

Munich is the capital city of the German federal state of Bavaria, and the third most populous city in Germany. Located at the banks of the river Isar in Southern Bavaria, it is famous for its beautiful architecture, fine culture, football fever (FC Bayern - Allianz Arena) and the annual Oktoberfest beer festival.

The Oktoberfest beer festival (known locally as Wies'n), has been held at the Theresienwiese (name in honor to the crown princess) since the beginning of the 19th century. This space offers hosts colossal beer pavilions and numerous attractions, such as amusement rides, side stalls, and games, as well as a wide variety of traditional foods. At the pavilions is where the party really happens, with music, food and much, much beer - around 8 million liters have been consumed these past years annually!

The Bavarian capital is home to over 80 museums (yes, 80!), making it one of Europe´s most cultural cities. Especially interesting to visit are the Pinakotheken (3 in total), which are divided by the type and time of the artwork. The “Alte” (old) Pinakothek was the largest gallery in Europe when it was built in the 19th century. The “Neue” (new) Pinakothek focuses on a collection of 19th-century artwork. And finally, but not less important, the “Modern” Pinakothek, which brings together a contemporary collection of art, architecture and design.

Munich should also be known for its “Gemǖtlichkeit” (a not-quite-translatable adjective that means something between cozy and well-being). During sunny days, locals enjoy much time outdoors at parks as Olympia Park (where the 1972 Olympics where held) or Englischer Garten (which is even bigger than NYC´s Central Park!), where is located the "standing wave" (the only surf spot in the middle of a city in the world), as well as huge beer gardens (as the one at the Chinese Tower) and the Monopteros (a circular colonnade on top of a hill) where many people go to enjoy one of the most beautiful views of the city.
